How to Grow Cucumbers Vertically

Thursday, January 22, 2015 | Publish by My CookBook

If you decide to grow cucumber, then I would definitely recommend vertical growing. Why? Cucumber gets more air this way, dries faster during cloudy days, diseases are rare and pests numbers reduced. It is easy to spot any problem or insects, and because cucumbers are hanging, they grow nicely shaped, straight and without that yellowish side which happens when you grow usual horizontal way.

Not only you will prevent diseases and get better looking cucumber, but it will last longer and give much more than one grown horizontally. Horizontal way only seems easier but in reality you lose that way on quantity and quality of cucumber.

This photo explains well why vertical is better way to grow cucumber than horizontal. Usually these small cucumbers, if you grow horizontally, end up in mud after rain or during watering, and either get damaged or they simply become yellow and fall off.

The most important thing is picking, which is really complicated when cucumber is spread all over. Touching leaves and moving plant, you actually damaging it and then diseases and problems start. Vertical growing allows you to see all cucumbers easily and pick without damaging leaves. Picking is much faster and much easier as time goes by, because at some point you are not bending anymore but picking cucumbers standing and walking between rows.

Simply buy nets for growing cucumbers, all better supplied shops for seed have it. Spread it as you would spread any wire fence, and tie it around support firmly. It is important to tighten everything, because cucumber as it grows becomes heavier. You don't want to lift entire row of cucumber if net falls down.

I am sure when you try vertical growing one year, you won't ever go back to old horizontal way.
